Streptomycin: discovery and resultant controversy.
نویسنده
چکیده
The antibiotic streptomycin was discovered soon after penicillin was introduced into medicine. Selman Waksman, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery, has since generally been credited as streptomycin's sole discoverer. However, one of Waksman's graduate students, Albert Schatz, was legally recognized as streptomycin's co-discoverer and received a share of the royalties from the drug. The aim of this essay is to discuss the streptomycin story, largely using previously unquoted archival material, and in particular to provide further evidence for the important role which Schatz played in the discovery.

The history of the discovery and development of streptomycin is reviewed here from the personal standpoint of a member of Dr. Selman Waksman’s antibiotic screening research team. The team approach of eight individuals illustrates how the gradual enhancement of the screening methodology was developed. I illustrate three study periods with key aspects in the development of streptomycin which led ...
متن کاملStreptomycin application has no detectable effect on bacterial community structure in apple orchard soil.
Streptomycin is commonly used to control fire blight disease on apple trees. Although the practice has incited controversy, little is known about its nontarget effects in the environment. We investigated the impact of aerial application of streptomycin on nontarget bacterial communities in soil beneath streptomycin-treated and untreated trees in a commercial apple orchard. Soil samples were col...
متن کاملAntimicrobial therapy of experimental enterococcal endocarditis.
The successful therapy of enterococcal endocarditis requires prolonged administration of synergistic antibiotic combinations. Controversy has arisen regarding optimal therapy (i) when the organism possesses high-level streptomycin resistance, and (ii) when the patient is allergic to penicillin. This study examines these questions in vitro and in a rabbit model of enterococcal endocarditis. The ...

متن کاملPoly(N-acryloyl-4- and -5-aminosalicylic acids. II. Antibacterial properties and uses for the preparation of active, insoluble antibiotics.
The antibacterial properties of poly(N-acryloyl-4- and -5-aminosalicylic acids) and their borate complexes were evaluated. Poly(N-acryloyl-4- and 5-aminosalicylic acids) were used to render the antibiotics streptomycin and gentamicin insoluble. The antibacterial properties of the resultant water-insoluble streptomycin and gentamicin derivatives were evaluated, and the results show that the poly...
